My chain slipped off and jamed between the back hub and the cassette, could not get it out had too carry the bike back too the VC( then wait 40mins for wifey too pick me up), I was 3\4 round gissy woods at the time... I got a new cassette fitted but its still not right, another vist too westbrooks i think..

I think the idea is that it's used where you might run a single (middle) ring and a bashguard (ie 9-speed) when it's more likely you'll lose your chain into the gap. As Gunner says, the hi/lo stop end screws stop you losing your chain off either back or front. It's only likely to jump into the gap when you're riding particularly quick, rough sections of trail, but you wouldn't have it in granny ring then anyway, so I can't see the point (unless you're running 9-speed).

My chain slipped off and jamed between the back hub and the cassette
The crappy bit of plastic sometimes fitted behind the cassette is meant to stop this but looks garbage - it's better to get the mech set up correctly and bin the plastic disc, imo.

Your rear mech is adjusted badly probably and overshifting the last sprocket.
Mild violence and wiggling normally gets the chain out.

these are more used by the pro road racers, so if it does drop of there not struggiling to get it back up, allot of them were using them...
