hi, i'm new here and quite new to mtb ing

i've been riding a really cheap bike for the past few years and have decided that a decent entry level hardtail would make sense

i tend to ride in the peak district, from road, to track, to some steepish ups and downs on the moor sides

i've been searching around, trying to find on paper what seems best to suit my budget (300 to 400)

so far i think i have come down to:

2008 rockhopper with v brakes
2008 gt avalanche with hydraulic forks and discs
2008 mongoose super tyax with hydraulic forks and discs

i'm going to the shop tonight to try afew and obviously the size will influence my decision but on paper, given that they are in descending price order which bike appears to be the best for my intended use?

oh yeah and does anyone know if the the rockhopper has hydraulic damping forks with, is it rebound something or other? Also is the rockhopper ready to upgrade to discs?

sorry for all the questions, am abit new to this game

thanks...

I am no longer recommending GT, yeah i knows its a safe bet for a starter, but you just can't beat this for the money.

Great specs, great frame, hopefully sombody will listen to me one of these days and invest, I don't think you can do better for under £400.

Hopefully your near a stockist to try one, once you know your size, then order it from Merlin !

Ok so I think weve all sussed bry has shares in commencal and I'm biased as I'm waiting for mine to turn up but, avid 3's 9 speed cassette and a sub 29lb weight for 375 gotta be a no brainer[/quote]

I'd go for the specialized any day mate! I bought the 2008 v-brake version in Januray and I love it. It's a great frame too, so it's a good 'base' bike with plenty of scope for future upgrades (ie disc brakes - which I'm about to buy).
