big brake problems

have been getting a screeching noise from the brakes the past week, a thought it was jst that the brake caliper needed moved abit

so when i was looking at it today had the pads of and there down to the metal Embarassed

but only on one of the pads in each caliper Question

so trying to bodge it all together for tomoro's race, the piston bit ( what pushes the pad out ) was stuck in, so i tryed to free it and the whole piston thing came out along with some brake fluid. no front brake then Rolling Eyes

im going to get some new pads through the week but im going to have to bleed the brake fluid

anyone got any tips for someone doing this the first time, and also will the piston be ok with me just pushing it back in Question

yep very intresting

but the brake fluid leaking was my fault probalys, when i pulled the piston free

anyways, im going to get some new pads and maybe just get the lbs to re bleed them, as i need them working spot on for the next race, as today it killed my chances Rolling Eyes

Have you got a bleed kit?

It's quite easy to bleed your brakes and top up but you will probably need two people to do it first time matey. What I'd suggest is that you maybe ask your lbs to do it this time, but ask them if you can watch how they do it.

What you basically do is crack a nipple at the caliper and work the brake lever to force oil and air out of the nipple as you pour fresh oil into the reservoir. This is the old school way - but some new systems mean that you might need a kit - shouldn't think you'd need that though....

Oh, first thing is to make sure the piston is back in properly and that you've cleaned away the muck that probably stopped it coming out in the first place... Laughing

Try the shop though - save you time and show you how to do it.

yeh i think that'll be the best option this time as i need them working spot on for sundays race ( and training at hetton infact )

im going to go down tomorow and get a set of new pads, and i no the bloke in the shop so if im about when he doing it ill ask him if i can watch

IIRC the shimano brakes you must use a kit as they dont have bleed nipples on them Confused

also does anyone no how much a shop will charge to bleed the brakes ( both ) and of course re fill with oil Laughing

went down to my lbs today ( had a un down for training ) and got some new pads, they didnt have shimano ones so i got some BBB ones, which seem pritty good

the back brake now works spot on, i only think it wasnt because the old pads were down to the metal so...

the front brake will do for now but its nothing spectacular, due to me loosing a bit oil.

im going to wait until theres a two week gap in between races and i'm going to bleed them myself
