Was looking for a bit of advice. A couple of months ago I upgraded to clip in pedals and went for the Shimano SPD. I have just got a new bike and the pedals that have come with it are Crank Brothers Candy C (egg beater type of fitting) they have also come with the cleats for my shoes.

I am not sure whether to get a set of SPD pedals for the new bike or to to get rid of them and buy another egg beater set and use them on my old bike aswell.

Any info/advice on both types would be great.

Cheers

I have used both, the shimano 520's and the Egg Candy C. There is not a lot between them, comes down to personal opinion, mine is the Egg's.

The 520's were good and solid, if a little heavy. Mud clearance in my opinion was not as good as they make out in the press, but they were reliable, 18 months in and no problems.

The Egg's I have had for 4 months now, lighter, more natural feel to them. The cleat tension is spot on for me, they are nice and tight when I them to be, and I can slip in and out fo them with ease, much better mud clearance then the 520's. Longetivity might be an issue though, whilst mine are still goign strong, I have heard they have to rebuilt every now and again, which is fairly easily to do by all accounts.

I agree with Bry5 - I've used both and found the Crank Bros to be the most comfortable.

HOWEVER, they have tiny little bearings in (that wear out) and you can't use the Crank Bros cleats with other pedals (which seems ok until you give your mate a shot on your bike and then can't clip into his pedals!)

On balance, although eggbeaters are nice kit, I hink that the Shimano's are more reliable and can be cheaply replaced when they wear out.

Just a thought, I use Eggbeater's and Mallat's I love everything about them, But the bearing's are utter rubbish. I also used spd's for many years and found them to be very good in all conditions except Ice or thick MUD, If I was going buy again I would Buy TIME as they have all the best features of the crank bro's with good bearing's, Shocked

Shimano - Cheap/work/last

Egg beaters are too fragile for me. I ground my last 2 sets into the ground and jumped back to shimano. The only makers pedal axle I've snapped too.
When the cleats wear (which they do at an alarming rate) the accidental releases are a real PITA as you want some upwards thrust and your foot ends up flying through the air.
