I looked at doing this with my hardtail but its more hastle to be honest.......you need to find hubs that hold the same disc's and in the exact same place.......also have the disc's bedded into the brake pads in order for them to work properly when you need them.....also the rear cassete/mech will wear at different rates to your chain and might need adjusting everytime you change the wheel.

In principal its a great idea but the little things put me off and for what time it takes to put a different set of tyres on the night before its not worth the hastle.

what wheels you got on it at the moment gunner, cos if there not the best, why not buy a new set of wheels for going offroad, and use the ones you've got on for what your wanting to do...

Well, it's something I used to do years ago with my Marin Palisades, Ian Cation made me a set of wheels up with ceramic rims which I fitted Nokia City Slickers to and I had no problem alternating them with the stock off road wheels that the Marin came with, or the cassette or chain. It certainly turned an mtb into a road rocket with those wheels fitted, much to the annoyance of a lot of "roadies" that I used to pass..... Laughing Laughing

Wether there is an issue with the disk brakes, then I don't know and would bow to some one elses technical expertise, but given that I would be using the original wheels/disk's for off road use then their performance should surely remain unchanged. If I was to sacrifice some braking power on the road, would that matter as everyone is telling me how great disks are, so the performance should at least equal the canti's I'm riding with already on my road bikes, surely. Confused Confused

Marty, the wheels are Mavic Crossrides Wink

As mentioned above if you buy another make or possibly model the spacing for the disc itself might be a mm different which will cause the disc to rub on the brake pad quite badly and basically either slow you down or at worst make horrible noises and be a PITA.
The same hubs "should" be fine as long as you use the same make discs.

Plenty of people do it so it shouldn't be a major issue with any other set of Mavic wheels.

you could always just re-align the calipers. it doesn't take very long.

Yes it would if you have everything that is matched to both sets.

Know your just looking at the mo Gunner but the price on these seems like a bit of a bargain, 199 all in.
