bry5 Joined: 16 Sep 2008 Posts: 274 Location: Leeds	Posted: Sat Oct 25, 2008 9:41 am    Post subject: Lesson In Maintenance Learnt a harsh lesson today, no matter how long you spend getting your pride and joy riding perfectly, if you don't check the cleats on your shoes are still tight, you will not get very far, well you might but it will be a struggle. I was powering up a hill, using the up stroke, felt a bit of give in the pedal, thought I am not stopping to look until I get to the top, before I got to the top my shoe came out with the cleat lodged in the pedal, no sign of the bolts anywhere ! Luckilly I was not too far from home, and on the upside, the left hand side of me feels like I could go out and ride again, the right hand side however is knackered I will now add a couple of cleat bolts to my spares kit in my hydration pack should it happen again, luckilly I have a few hanging about. _________________ Drums keep pounding a rhythm to the brain La-dee-da-dee-dee La-dee-da-dee-da

Posted: Sat Oct 25, 2008 4:20 pm    Post subject: I suppose I shall have to add a spare pair of shoes to my list then, as after powering up a very steep hill I ripped the cleat and part of my sole off trying to get up the very, very steep top singletrack section. Still had another 14 mile to go which featured some on foot steep hill climbing, let's just say the ball of my foot was very tender the next day _________________ Big wheels keep on turning, Carry me home to see my kin..............

My mates rear mech hanger broke on one ride so had to push it back home. _________________ Where theres muck theres money........well im still diging and skint.

I often swap between some Spuds and some Eggs, but only have the one pair of decent trail shoes, not an option if I want to swap the cleats. Typically I'm an absolute max of an hours walk from home and you can normally coast plenty of stuff if you lose your chain or a pedal. I've continued group rides before without a chain by running, coasting and short cuts. If the bike has a replaceable dropout it's unlikely you'll snap it so you tend to be able to get away with dodgy gears for the rest of the ride. If I'm away from home i'll take a spare hanger in the car even if it's a straightened bent one.
